CAT 2009 is Online
It is now officially announced that cat 2009 is online. Now CAT exam will have to be conducted in staggered batches within a window period of a few months. Not all students will be able to take the exam on the same day as is the case now. The other change will be that instead of the current single exam paper, the online test will have several different papers of the same level of difficulty.

CAT vs GMAT/GRE

The online model will be similar to US exams like the GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test) and the GRE (Graduate Record Examination).GRE and GMAT follows Computer Adaptive Test approach. The question naturally arises what is Computer Adaptive Test? A computer-adaptive testing is a method for administering tests that adapts to the examinee's ability level.

Computer Adaptive Test successively selects questions so as to maximize the precision of the exam based on what is known about the examinee from previous questions. From the examinee's perspective, the difficulty of the exam seems to tailor itself to his or her level of ability. For example, if an examinee performs well on an item of intermediate difficulty, he will then be presented with a more difficult question. Or, if he performed poorly, he would be presented with a simpler question. Compared to static multiple choice tests that nearly everyone has experienced, with a fixed set of items administered to all examinees, computer-adaptive tests require fewer test items to arrive at equally accurate scores.

So will the IIMs follow the same methodology to gauge the ability of examinee? For the time being it seems IIMs are not going to follow Computer Adaptive Test approach. But in near future this is going to be followed, as it is the best method available till now, to find the true ability of examinee.

So CAT-2009 is going to be different from GMAT and GRE in following ways:

1. Results will not appear instantly (once the test is over).
2. It will not be Computer Adaptive Test (Question patterns changing as per examinee ability)

Otherwise, everything seems to be on the same line as these International exams have. For example:

1. How Reading Comprehension will look like? An RC on the computer screen, where it appears vertically on the left half of the screen and the right half has questions.
2. Questions in quant appearing one by one. But it might be a possibility that you can navigate questions in forward and backward manner. To have a feel of all these you can navigate through different features of MindInsight.
